Put in simple terms, a "Christian" is a follower of Christ.

They as an individual, must have accepted Jesus Christ and understood what the apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:1-3 which reads as follows; "Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures".  Further more, they must comply with the pattern laid down in the scriptures to be able to avail of the benefits of Christ death which are:

You must hear and respond to the gospel

The Word of God is the oracles of God (Ro​m 3:2) and it contains the words of faith (Rom 10:8). They are a lamp and light (Psalm 119:115) and there is no other gospel (Gal 1:8,9)
